I cannot reproduce it on my dual PIII. While I try to find an Athlon UP 
around here can you edit ".runinfo", in testsuite/kern/latency, 
substituting the single line there with the following:
latency:lxrt+fifos:push latency_rt;./display;popall:control_c
and see what happens?
